New London Public Schools’: Early Childhood Program Options & Registration Process

January 2024

Dear Families,

New London Public Schools remains committed to supporting young children (and their families) with robust early childhood learning programs and experiences. This coming school year (SY24-25), the district is planning to expand its offerings to include the following programs and services:

  1. Toddler Playgroup: Our toddler playgroup program invites young children, ages 2.0-3.0 years old, to join in part-day learning experiences, alongside their parent/guardian.
  2. Preschool Programming Our preschool program offers full and part-day classes. It aims to serve young children aged 3.0 years to 4.5 years old. The preschool classrooms are found in our BP Mission Building, located at 40 Shaw Street, in New London, CT.
  3. Transitional Kindergarten Program: Transitional Kindergarten programming will be a new option for young children who are at least 4.5 years old. Students who are not age 5 by September 1st will qualify for this program. One Transitional Kindergarten program is being planned for each of our elementary schools and full and part-day programming will be offered in each.
  4. Specialized Placement: Customized student-learning programming, aligned to each student’s Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.s), is offered in our BP Preschool Center and each elementary school. Students are placed in these specialized programs based on team decisions made at a special education Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meeting.
  5. Multi-Age, Multi-Year, Year-Round Schooling Program: NLPS is home to unique schooling options for families to include a multi-age, year-round schooling model. In this model, students go to school for 6-week sessions, followed by a two-week break, rotating around the calendar year. A PreK/Transitional K option for year-round schooling may be considered based on parent interest. Within elementary schools, year-round programs are already established for grades K/1, 2/3, and 4/5. The year-round schooling calendar can be found on our district’s website at www.newlondon.org.
  6. Early Childhood Parent Leadership Teams: NLPS values our parent partnerships. Parents are their children’s first teachers and know them best. Therefore, they are invited to be a part of our Early Childhood Parent Leadership team. Here adults collaborate, review data, plan, and initiate additional early childhood learning opportunities, and develop and collate resources to be shared across the community.
  7. Birth to Age 8 Community Gatherings: NLPS hosts Birth to Age 8 Community Gatherings, alongside City personnel and community partners, to build relationships, collaborate, share space, food, resources and learning about a variety of early childhood topics. All are invited to join us in these evening events, that occur multiple times per school year. Please see our event calendar on our district’s website www.newlondon.org.

NLPS’ Early Childhood Programs & Registration Process

Placement of young children into various programs will be made based on the following criteria:

  1. Available spaces/slots in the program
  2. Age of child
  3. Developmental levels of child, as measured by the CT DOTs assessment and in-person, early childhood developmental screeners
  4. Special Education and/or 504 designations (as applicable)

Steps in the regular Kindergarten Registration Process: Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1st to automatically qualify for kindergarten. Each child in this category will go through the following steps of the registration process.

  1. Early childhood program options will be advertised publicly from January 15th through April 19th.
  2. Parents will complete a Registration Form, identifying their program preferences.
  3. The last day for a family to register their child, showing interest in an early childhood program, for the school year 2024-2025, will be Friday, April 5th. (*Note: Early childhood programming will be filled on a first come, first-serve basis. Once we have received enough applications to fill our slots, registration will close.)
  4. Parents will be contacted in early April to schedule an in-person screening appointment for their child. Appointments will be held at our new NLPS’ Welcome Center, located at 3 Shaw’s Cove in New London, CT.
  5. Families will know the placement of their child by June 30th.
  6. Families will be invited to attend additional opportunities to visit their child’s school and get to know staff, etc. during summer welcoming/orientation programs.

Here is a link to a video in English, and Spanish welcoming you to our school district.

Thank you for your interest in joining our family at New London Public Schools.

Sincerely, Dr. Ritchie, Superintendent of Schools

Our STEM Magnet Pathway Named One of the Top 100 in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report

Magnet high schools are public high schools that offer specialized courses, often designed around a theme. Any student in the designated region can attend, which causes most magnet schools to use a lottery system to accept applicants. Some magnet schools use an application process that involves test scores and GPAs. Our STEM Magnet Pathway is Named One of the Top 100 in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report!
