Superintendent Ritchie's Communication 1-29-21

January 29, 2021

Dear Members of the NLPS Community,

The district is coming to the end of a district-wide, twelve-day Distance Learning implementation period.  We continue to be incredibly grateful for everyone’s flexibility as we navigate various COVID-related circumstances that come each day.

Due to the uncertainty of the incoming inclement weather on Monday and Tuesday of next week, the district will continue to remain in full Distance Learning mode through Wednesday, February 3, 2021.   We are hopeful that this decision will allow for a smooth continuum of learning for students, without weather-related school closures or early releases, as we navigate the early part of next week.  Safety, consistency, and advance notice to the school community are a priority as we work together to co-support students.

We are incredibly hopeful that as we reopen in Hybrid Model, for Cohort B students on Thursday, February 4th, we will be able to continue our two models of in-person Hybrid and full-time Distance Learning instruction, with no further district-wide interruptions as we continue our journey through this school year.  We thank you very much for your flexibility and support of your children during the past two weeks. Our engagement and attendance numbers for online learning continue to be very high.  Students and teachers are working incredibly hard and we thank you for your support, too!

As with previous virtual learning weeks, all students will participate in live teaching and learning, throughout the day Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week in all grades K-12. Technology help and supply distribution will still take place on Wednesday, at Jennings School from 9 AM – 5PM, weather permitting. Please remember to come to the back parking lot, to the door marked “Supplies” and a team will meet you there.

We have learned a lot throughout this school year and are pleased that our in-district COVID data demonstrates that our mitigation strategies are working.  Mask wearing and hand washing have been critical steps to keeping everyone safe, as outlined in our minimal in-school transmission data.  The continuous flow of data received, and actions taken daily and weekly, are of benefit to all.  Our district has been made aware of five new COVID positive cases this past week.  Our daily and weekly data reminds us that COVID-19 germs are around, and all are encouraged to continuously implement COVID mitigation strategies whether at home, out in the community, or at school. Extra precautions must always be taken to keep all safe. Please continue to report both student and staff positive cases by calling us at 860-701-5813.  We continue to take calls morning, afternoons, and evenings.

Food Distribution will be available for Cohort A on Monday morning from 7:30-11:30 AM, weather permitting.  Additional updates will be sent out on Sunday evening.

Thank you for your flexibility and support as we work together to ensure safety for all.

Sincerely,
Superintendent Ritchie
