Launch of Our New District Website:

We are excited to release our updated NLPS website on Thursday, January 7th!  (www.newlondon.org) We are SUPER proud of its many visual and operational improvements and wish to highlight and thank Toby Mathew for all his efforts in bringing its design and build to fruition.  As it launches, please take time to explore our new website and the many links.  We value your feedback.  If you see something you like or something that needs adjustment, please send it to Toby at: mathewt@newlondon.org.

Technology Help:

If you or your student needs technology help, we will be available to assist today, Tuesday January 5th, from 9:00-5:00 p.m. at Jennings School.  Elementary instructional supplies and middle school math books will also be available.  Please park in the back parking lot.

Food Services:

Meal distribution will occur at all schools on Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

FY22 Budget Development:

Hard work is already underway on the development of our district’s FY22 budget. School principals have invited all families to come together to review our existing budget and to share any ideas, requests, input, etc. regarding the development of our next school year’s budget.  Please continue to share any additional thoughts with your school principal directly.  The proposed budget will be presented to the Board of Education and the community over a series of multiple days to be able to share New London Public School’s “story” of strength, need, and next steps.

An outline of these budget workshops and meetings is as follows:

  • January 7: Special Finance & Audit Committee Meeting of the Board of Education for the budget development process.
  • February 18: Board of Education Special Meeting: Budget Workshop 1.
  • February 18: Budget Inquiry Form to launch on website.*
  • February 23: Board of Education Special Meeting: Budget Workshop 2.
  • February 24: Public Hearing on the Budget.
  • February 24: Budget Inquiry Form to close on the website.
  • February 25: Board of Education Business Meeting and continued budget discussions. (Possible approval of budget.)
  • March 4: Tentative (if needed) Board of Education Special Meeting for budget approval.
  • March 15: Transmission of Final budget to the Mayor of the City of New London.

*Answers to the questions submitted via the Budget Inquiry Form will be provided at Board of Education meetings and posted on the district website.

The Board of Education will adopt its final form of a budget to go forward to the Mayor and City Council by March 15, 2021.  The City will then begin its budget process, with the hope to have an approved budget for FY 2021-2022 as soon as possible.

Dreaming Big:

I continue to be filled with excitement, focusing on more ways to fulfill many hopes and dreams for all as we enter 2021!  I see a huge opportunity at hand.  Our world has changed.  It is clear we are no longer navigating a temporary interruption, but rather have been given the ownership to design our tomorrows.  New doors have opened for how we educate and support our students and each other.  The possibilities are amazing!

I encourage all to take a few moments to think about their own hopes and dreams for our students.  If you had three wishes for them, what would they be?  I also ask you to think about what we have learned from our already tried “new” experiences educating our students.  What has worked?  What hasn’t been effective?  What ideas do you have for how we can creatively design other NEW educational and operational structures, for how we might educate our students, as we plan for the next school year?

I find great benefit in LISTENING to others as I believe great ideas come collectively, as people work together.  In line with our District Improvement Plan (Superintendent’s Faculty, Student and Parent Advisory goals), I will be joining schools’ Student Advisory and Parent Advisory groups, throughout the winter, to participate alongside students and parents in these discussions.  I hope to see you there!

COVID-19 Data:

Here is our district’s COVID data for the week of Dec. 28th- Jan. 1, 2021: Two (2) positive cases were reported during the winter break.  Both individuals will remain in quarantine until their assigned date to return.  To report a COVID-positive test result, please call 860-701-5813.

In addition, our comprehensive district data is uploaded to this site each week. https://data.ct.gov/browse?COVID-19_Topic=Schools.

Well-Wishes for 2021!

I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful new year!  Our students are amazing.  Our staff is amazing.  We have witnessed and modeled perseverance and adaptability as we navigated many new ways of learning and doing over the past ten months.  I thank all families for your continued partnership.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Superintendent Ritchie
