April 7, 2021
Dear Members of the NLPS Whaler Family,
We are excited to move into the month of April and towards the spring season! Please find some important district-wide updates below.
Over the past few weeks, we moved over 700 students who were in Cohort A or B into our new Cohort AB model, which provides in-person instruction four days a week. It is wonderful to see new energy and smiles back in our hallways and classrooms! Beginning April 26, the in-person model will be 4-days for all students. Families may still opt for the full time Distance Learning program if they prefer not to return 4-days. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Kate McCoy at 860-271-4005 or email@example.com. The next layer of reopening is to onboard any full-time Distance Learning students, who wish to join Cohort AB. The goal is to have all students that desire to be in school four days a week back in school by Monday, April 26th. We continue to thank you for your patience with this process and your continued partnership supporting students and teachers.
Instructional Models 4/5 – 4/30:
Please see the calendar of the NLPS Instructional Model Below reflecting the updated changes to the AB Cohort. Additionally, we will continually review our COVID data to prepare for the next step.
We are planning a variety of summer programs for children and adults, PreK-12. These include in person and virtual summer school options as well as individualized and/or small group tutoring, mentoring, and counseling. There will be a variety of optional enrichment club and wellness opportunities as well. Core summer programs begin on July 12th and will run for 5 weeks. Students will be invited to a two day a week programs or four day a week program, Monday-Thursday. Families may also select tutoring slots and enrichments. We are also planning enrichment and wellness events for adults, to include opportunities for staff and families. Please be on the lookout for our Summer Programming Guide, to be published after April break. Families will be able to register for programs then.
Graduation and Promotion Update:
School leaders are working with parents, staff, and student groups to outline various plans for graduations and spring celebrations and events. Plans for in-person celebrations, as well as virtual options, are being outlined. Each event will need to follow the parameters outlined in the Governor’s Executive orders, effective in June. Building principals will keep families informed as decisions are made. Excitement is in the air!
Student of the Month/Employee of the Month:
We had the pleasure of honoring both students and adults, from each building, as Students of the Month and Employees of the Month at this past Thursday’s Board of Education meeting. We are SO PROUD of each one of these amazing people! Please click here to view the slideshow of our recognized students and employees! Congratulations to all!
Updated and FINAL 2020-2021 School Year Calendar:
At the Board of Education’s regular meeting on March 25, the updated 2020-2021 school year calendar was approved, confirming Wednesday, June 23, 2021 as the last day of the school year. This calendar can be viewed for your reference here. Please know that the proposed 2021-2022 school year calendar will be going to the Board for approval soon and will be shared with all upon confirmation.
The week of March 28th through April 1st, there were five (5) COVID-positive cases (of students and/or staff) that were reported to the district which impacted over twenty (20) people. Those impacted have been advised to isolate or quarantine. All are reminded to notify the district immediately by calling 860-701-5813 when you or your child are notified of a positive test result. Please stay vigilant, implementing all COVID-19 safety protocols whether in school, home, or out in communities. COVID is still very real and still very prevalent. Our district had 24 positive cases during March. The link to the CT COVID Data Portal for all CT schools can be viewed here.
COVID-19 Vaccines for Students:
The district is working together with the CT DPH and Ledge Light Health District to organize a school-based vaccine clinic for students who are 16 years of age and older and wish to receive the vaccine. More information about this opportunity will be communicated soon.
Spring athletics are up and running! Please contact Phil Orbe if you have any questions. firstname.lastname@example.org
School Uniform Survey:
This school year, school uniforms were not required for students in grades K-8 due to COVID precautions. We are interested in family’s input regarding school uniforms for next school year. Please take one minute to share your thoughts by clicking here to take our survey. Thank you!
I appreciate your partnership ensuring excellence for all students.
