NHAMS provides a truly unique learning environment.  Using instructional models from the Lincoln Center and Higher Order Thinking Schools, NHAMS engages all students in exploring and becoming curious, compassionate, self-directed, life-long learners.  Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School is a Spotlight School through the Connecticut Office of the Arts and has a recent Teacher of the Year for both New London Public Schools and Magnet Schools of America Northeast Region.  School principal, Carlos X. Leal, stated, “This award and recognition is a testament to the amazing staff, families, and students at our school.  We are dedicated in a collective effort to ensure that all of our students experience the best possible education and have access to an immense world of opportunities in the arts and beyond.”  NHAMS regularly partners with arts organization in and beyond the New London community, including the Garde Arts Center, Mystic Art Museum, the Florence Griswold Museum, Flock Theatre, the Lyman Allen Art Museum, and many more.  “It is because of the amazing culture of excellence and the tireless efforts of our entire community that we are receiving this recognition,” Leal adds.  To learn more about the school visit www.nathanhalearts.org or call (860) 447 – 6060 and schedule a tour.

Magnet School of Excellence Awards are only given to a select group of magnet schools. Schools of Excellence are eligible to receive monetary awards and are eligible to be named the nation’s top Elementary, Secondary, or New & Emerging Magnet School. One of the Schools of Excellence will also be selected to win $5,000 and the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, which is considered the most prestigious magnet school award in the nation.

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
