Science & Technology Magnet High School (STMHS) has been named a nationally certified magnet school by Magnet Schools of America (MSA), the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. STMHS was among 21 schools located in 12 states (AL, CT, FL, IL, KY, LA, MN, NC, NM, NV, SC, and TX) to successfully complete a rigorous two-year evaluation process and demonstrate through evidence,  reflection, and strategic action that it has established the best practices entailed in the Magnet School Standards of Excellence

“The certification process recognizes the highest quality schools in public education. Nationally certified magnet schools illustrate and emulate rigorous theme-based curriculum, ensure diverse settings in which students thrive and are prepared for college and career,” said Kelly Bucherie, Director for Magnet School Leadership, Magnet Schools of America.

The national certification process is based on the Standards of Excellence and the five pillars of magnet schools: diversity, innovative curriculum and professional development, academic excellence, high-quality instructional systems, and family and community partnerships. Together, these qualities define the common elements of exemplary magnet programs.

To become nationally certified, STMHS submitted a detailed application and participated in a rigorous evaluation conducted by the National Institute for Magnet School Leadership (NIMSL). The application process required the school to submit evidence demonstrating how it meets each of the multiple indicators within the Standards of Excellence. This included providing specific examples of how the school is promoting school diversity thru t, closing the achievement gap, integrating a theme-based curriculum throughout the school day, and encouraging parent and community involvement.

STMHS went through an in-depth self-assessment that addressed the 45 indicators of the MSA Five Pillars, as well as the primary objectives of its school improvement plan. It shared its progress in meeting these standards with evidence such as a) the Magnet School’s work in cultural competence and diversity that prepares under-represented groups for STEM careers and post-secondary education b) the Academic Parent -Teacher Teams that help parents set academic goals for their children, as well as develop and implement specific home plans to increase their child’s academic performance based on data and c) the schoolwide instructional strategies that challenge and enhance student learning.  Director of STMHS, Mrs. Texidor comments, “This recognition is very rewarding because it has been a long, two-year process that under-scores our continuous efforts to enrich and enhance our programming and culture.   We are proud of our staff, students and families whose dedication and diligence have made this acknowledgement possible.”

STMHS
will be recognized during a ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 37th National Conference in Baltimore, Maryland on April 10-13, 2019.
