Social Emotional Learning
Social-Emotional Support
NLPS embraces the development of social and emotional learning for all students to provide a foundation for safe and positive learning and to enhance each student’s ability to succeed in school, career, and life.
Social Emotional Learning
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. People with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially.
NLPS adheres to the CASEL framework of social-emotional skill development. The short-term goals of SEL development are to: (1) promote students’ self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship, and responsible decision-making skills; and (2) improve student attitudes and beliefs about self, others, and school. These, in turn, provide a foundation for better adjustment and academic performance as reflected in more positive social behaviors and peer relationships, fewer conduct problems, less emotional distress, and improved grades and test scores. Integral to this work are strong family and community partnerships.

Mental Health Supports
In addition to SEL instruction, all NLPS schools are staffed with a comprehensive team of psychologists, social workers, and school counselors who provide a high level of student mental health services. Students in need of individual or group counseling, crisis management, and social skill development are supported during the school day. To access more information or make a referral, please reference the appropriate school personnel below: Click here to see our Support Staff.
Students and families are also encouraged to submit anonymous concerns through Anonymous Alerts, NLPS’s anonymous reporting app. All reports are followed up by school and district personnel. Please click here to see Anonymous Alerts.
