Bilingual & ESOL Programs

The goal of the Programs for English Learners (ELs) is to provide English language development (ELD) and content area instruction to students learning English as an additional language, thus, leading to proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, comprehension and writing skills in addition to academic excellence. 

Dual Language Immersion Program: (PreK-8) A program of instruction whereby the students are taught in two languages (Spanish and English) by alternating weeks in a 50/50 model.  Spanish-speaking students who are identified as ELs have the option of attending the Dual Language Program at C.B. Jennings (PreK-5) or Bennie Dover (6-8). The Dual Language program encourages native speakers of English to apply.

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)/Bilingual Support: (K-12):  A program of instruction where students are taught English as an additional language.  ESOL teachers or tutors may work with students in a self-contained class or through a pull-out/push-in model. Bilingual support services are provided by Spanish-speaking, as well as Haitian/Creole and Arabic-speaking tutors, in content classes. 

Sheltered Content Instruction (SI): (9-12) at New London High School- An approach for teaching language and content to ELs.   In our district, sheltered English is presently used as a program of instruction at the secondary level.  Academic subjects are taught using English with specific strategies that allow for comprehensible input. Teachers use the core curriculum that is modified to meet the language development needs of ELs.
