International Education

Students in the International Pathway will graduate high school with the tools they need to communicate, understand, and excel in a multicultural world through study of more than one language and cultural understanding.

K-5: C.B. Jennings Dual Language and International Elementary Magnet offers an exciting and innovative Dual Language and FLES magnet school theme offered to New London residents. Dual Language is an enrichment program that allows students to learn a second language through academic content.  Students in the Dual Language Program receive classroom instruction, including reading, writing, science, social studies, and math, in English and Spanish. Students spend 50% of their day in both languages.  Jennings’ Dual Language teachers are highly trained in second language acquisition and special instructional strategies are used to make the content understandable.

It is recommended that students enter the Dual Language Program in Kindergarten or grade 1. Due to the rigor of the program, it is difficult to enter students, after grade 1, who have no Spanish language ability. If your child does have Spanish language ability and you would like for them to be considered for available slots beyond the first grade, please contact Ms.Maribel Olivero to discuss enrollment, at (860) 439-7810.

Students in the FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) Program receive classroom instruction in English while taking Spanish as a foreign language class. Students learn basic communication, culture and technology through critical-thinking skills. FLES classes are taught by a certified World Language Teacher and is available to students in grades K–5.

C.B. Jennings Dual Language and International Elementary Magnet is a candidate school* for the Primary Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy - a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students.

6-12: Students are encouraged to continue their studies in the Dual Language Program at the middle school level as sixth graders. Course schedules for students will include content classes in both Spanish and English and elective classes with their peers.  By the end of 8th grade, students may be eligible to receive advance high school credit in Spanish, allowing students to enroll in Advanced Placement classes in high school earlier or an opportunity to become tri-lingual and study a third language.

Students not enrolled in the Dual Language Program at the middle school level may continue their foreign language and culture study in Spanish through the World Language Program.  Students will have the opportunity to complete a high school level 1 Spanish class by the end of 8th grade. Students who successfully pass the level 1 final exam will be placed in a level 2 Spanish class as ninth graders. French is also available at the high school level.
