Dear New London Public Schools’ Parents and Guardians,

It is with great excitement that we welcome you and your students back to the 2017-2018 school year! The first day of school, for all students is Thursday, August 31st.

Our steadfast commitment to providing Magnet Schools of Excellence for all of our students is unwavering. Our district has been making great strides in its transition to an all magnet district. As we welcome students and families to our many new and exciting programs, from pre-school to magnet schools in grades K-12, New London Public Schools continues to shine. In addition, many of our students attended summer school programs and our faculty and staff worked throughout the summer attending trainings and workshops, building skills and developing new techniques to better enhance the learning environment for our students.

The first day of school is fast approaching and we ask that you keep the following tips in mind for the new school year:

  • Elementary and Middle School uniforms can be found at Walmart, Target, Old Navy, Kohl’s, JC Penney, etc.
  • If your child attends C.B. Jennings Dual Language and International Elementary Magnet, Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School, BDJMS Language, Culture & Leadership, Arts Magnet Middle School, or STEM Magnet Middle School, please call Darter Specialties at 203-699-9805 to purchase uniforms and other apparel with the school’s logo.
  • The school bus schedule can be found on newlondon.org, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  Don’t delay in signing your child up for the bus.  We recommend families visit www.safestopapp.com and sign up for the SafeStop App to help you keep track of your child's bus and when they will be home.
  • If your student attended New London Public Schools this past school year, you will be required to complete online re-enrollment through SchoolMint at www.newlondon.schoolmint.net. Instructions for the new re-Enrollment process will be distributed in September. This process will give our returning families the opportunity to update important information, including address changes, household and emergency contact information, and student health and permissions.

Student attendance is crucial to your child’s success! Our goal this year is to improve attendance in all of our schools and we encourage parents to help us accomplish this goal.

Following are six important Attendance Tips to help promote student learning:

  • Maintain a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine to make sure children are rested and alert when they get to school.
  • Turn off all electronics, including TVs, phones, and tablets at bedtime.
  • Make sure clothes and backpacks are ready the night before.
  • Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
  • Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your student feels anxious about going to school.
  • Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen Tracy
Interim Superintendent of Schools
