COVID-19 Masking Update 2.24.22
Good morning, NLPS community. Governor Lamont’s state-wide mask mandate, requiring all to wear masks when inside PreK-12 school buildings, will expire on Monday, February 28th. The Board of Education continued discussion regarding this topic last night.
Starting next Monday, New London Public Schools will transition to strongly recommending masks be worn by all when inside schools and district buildings. In addition to strongly recommending the continued use of universal masking when in school buildings, NLPS highlights additional COVID-19 mitigation measures to be used regularly. These include staying home when sick, getting vaccinated, testing for COVID-19 (if known exposure or symptoms exist), frequent hand washing, hand sanitizing, and cleaning of high touch places, and socially distancing to the best extent possible. The district is able to continue to provide masks, COVID-19 testing kits, other PPE tools (face masks, gowns, desk shields) to those who request such. In addition, NLPS will continue to work closely with its local health providers to host additional vaccine clinics in schools and advertise other opportunities, for vaccinations and testing sites, throughout the community.
The attached document outlines additional tools and resources, as well as shared expectations for outbreak responses, as we continue to navigate COVID-19. Daily COVID-19 communications will continue to be shared to keep all informed of our district’s data and necessary responses.
Additionally, please note that wearing masks on buses, and when riding any form of public transportation, is a federal mandate that still remains.
I thank the entire school community for their continued dedication, flexibility, and responsible actions that will keep everyone safe, as all continue to navigate the COVID-19 health pandemic.
Let’s continue to Unite in Excellence.
Sincerely,
CynthiaAttachments:

COVID-19 Updates - 1.10.22
January 10, 2022
Over the past week we distributed over 1,200 COVID-19 home testing kits to our staff and our families. We also distributed N95 masks to staff at each school and to C/O employees. We have more to share. An additional allotment of COVID home testing kits will be handed to school nurses tomorrow to be able to distribute directly to families of sick children who are exhibiting symptoms.
Please remember that under the new guidance, staff and students who are close contacts of someone who has tested positive, and are fully vaccinated, will not have to quarantine if they are asymptomatic.. Testing guidance will be provided to them.
Individuals (vaccinated or not) who have tested POSITIVE for COVID-19, and are displaying related symptoms, should immediately isolate for 5 days and can return to work and other activities on day 6 or later provided they have been fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medications for at least 24 hours and other symptoms are improving.
CDC has advised that some symptoms may persist for weeks or months (such as residual congestion or loss of taste and smell), but the continuing presence of those symptoms need not delay the end of isolation. Staff are expected to report to work after their quarantine period has ended.
As always, please follow COVID-safety protocols. Wash your hands frequently, properly wear a face mask (to cover the nose and mouth) - except during schedule mask breaks and when eating, and practice safe social distancing. Staff and students are reminded to wear masks so that they fully cover one’s nose and mouth, except during scheduled mask breaks, when outside for recess, or while eating. Your health and safety are important to us.
The state’s three strategies for COVID safety include: 1.) vaccines; 2.) mask wearing; and 3.) testing. We are pleased all three are available to our staff and families.
