Arts Pathway Program Guide

An artist at Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School should be able to experience art not only as a creator of an artistic piece, they should be exposed to arts and use the arts as a means to engage in learning of non-arts content. In addition, students should be able to think critically about a work of art and transfer those same cognitive skills to notice deeply, pose questions and make connections. What makes Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School unique is that artists will experience direct and indirect learning of the National Core Arts Standards. The National Core Arts Standards, adopted by Connecticut in the fall of 2016, outline 5 artistic disciplines for our students. These disciplines include Music, Visual, Theater, Dance and Media Arts. Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School offers essential classes in each of these disciplines, while also working to integrate these arts into the general education setting. A mathematician at Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School should be able to engage with the concepts of Mathematics as an investigator and problem solver. They are encouraged to focus on the process of problem solving with the intent to deepen their conceptual understanding. Visual learning with a focus on reasoning and modeling is facilitated by our teachers and mathematicians are to be critical thinkers, discuss various solutions and engage in accountable talk. A reader and writer at Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School should be able to engage with the concepts of English Language Arts as a learner of grammatical rules, structure and voice for the purpose of enjoying, learning from and creating literary work in the form of books, reports, narratives, and poetry to name a few. Within reading, students are challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they have read. The overall focus for literacy instruction is to engage readers and writers in critical-thinking, problem-solving, and the utilization of analytical skills. A scientist at Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School should be able to engage with the concepts of science as an investigator and solution finder. Our teachers use an inquiry-based approach to science instruction. Scientists are encouraged to use science and engineering practices to learn more about and experience grade level Science content. Lessons are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) which outline what students are expected to know and do in science for all grade levels.
