TO EXCEL

To excel is to continually perform.

Not for a moment or moments.

Not for a day or days.

But to perform day after day,

Month after month after month,

and to make that uncommon performance

look commonplace.

To excel is to take the inner drive

of competition and not only embrace it,

but master it.

It is no wonder then, that when one

truly excels, one is known for excellence.

It cannot be taught, or legislated, or

willed into existence.

It must come from

the very depth of an

individuals desire

to be the best.

Why study music?

Some of the many benefits of participation in music include the enhancement of: -Problem solving -Teamwork -Goal-setting -Self-expression -Memory skills -Coordination -Concentration -Self-confidence -Self esteem

Study after study show a direct relationship between students involved with their high school music programs and academic success.

“Research shows that when arts are included in the student’s curriculum, reading, writing and math scores improve.” (California Council of the Fine Arts Deans)

“New York schools show 90% of their students who participate in music go to college” (Today’s Edition)

“High School music students have higher grade point averages than non-music students in the same school. Students with band experience attend college at a rate twice the national average. Music students score an average 64 points higher on their SAT tests in 1989” (Bands Across the USA, 1989)

“Successful music students tend to possess the qualities and skills that are considered essential to employers in business, education and service organization. They are ahead of others in writing, communication skills and analytical skills. They also have a high degree of self-discipline. We have now discovered that music students show the highest SAT scores.” (The Instrumentalist, Nov. 1988)

"College admissions officers continue to cite participation in music as an important factor in making admissions decisions. They claim that music participation demonstats time management, creativity, expression and open-mindedness." (Arts May Improve Students Grades, Associated Press, 1999)

"A 1997 study of elemenary students' math test scores rose as their time in arts education classes increased." (Arts exposure and Class Performance, 1998)
