What is commitment?

"Giving up convenience, going the extra mile, inviting personal discomfort ,

embracing confrontation, sacrificing instant gratification for the mission at hand.

There are no miracle solutions. Excellence is achieved through commitment."

                                                   - Lautzenheiser

TO EXCEL

To excel is to continually perform.

Not for a moment or moments.

Not for a day or days.

But to perform day after day,

Month after month after month,

and to make that uncommon performance

look commonplace.

To excel is to take the inner drive

of competition and not only embrace it,

but master it.

It is no wonder then, that when one

truly excels, one is known for excellence.

It cannot be taught, or legislated, or

willed into existence.

It must come from

the very depth of an

individuals desire

to be the best.

THANK YOU TO THE CITY OF NEW LONDON for your support in our obtaining new marching band uniforms. We could not have done it otherwise.

WHALER PRIDE BAND

The New London High School Band is known for working hard and having fun in the process. It is for this reason that the band is more than just a class or a group of students; the band is more like a family. The students learn about music, being responsible, how to manage their time, but they also have the support of their fellow musicians, and our staff whether it be related to music, academics or otherwise.

The NLHS band program exists for the following purposes:

    1) To represent, symbolize and advance the public image of

        NLHS and the community.

    2) To provide a venue for students wanting to continue to

developing their musical knwledge and skills.

    3) To share the love of music and music making.

    4) To actively work at building spirit in the NLHS community.

The Whaler Pride band is comprised of theConcert Band and the Marching Band. Participation in the NLHS band program includes particpation in both concert and marching aspects. Percussion Ensemble is part of the band and participates in all band functions as well.

The school year begins with marching band, which lasts a little more than 2 months until the beginning of November. The marching band will perform at home football games, two parades and one marching competition (the opportunity exists for participation in more marching competitions). Rehearsals for marching band will take place once a week on Thursdays from 2:30 to 5:00 and will end on November 8th.

The remainder of the year is concert band which begins in earnest in early November and continues through the last day of the school year. The concert band will perform 3 formal concerts, a Memorial Day performance (in-school), a spring festival/competition and various ceremonial performances ending with the NLHS graduation.

The concert band goes on a yearly Spring trip. The trip is a festival and competition. A typical trip would include a day of sightseeing, a day dedicated to the competition and a day in an amusement park. The trip is paid for by the student, this is done either through student payments or fundraising or both.

Some past band trips have included the following: Virginia Beach, VA, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Canada, Williamsburg, VA, Sandusky, OH, Hershey, PA

Parents are encouraged to be involved in the band program including chaperoning marching band and the Spring trip.

New London Marching Band

The Whaler Pride marching band combines traditional marching and competitive drum corps style with a show band attitude. The Whaler show includes challenging drill and visual effects with contemporary music that audiences enjoy.

This year's marching band staff include the following:

Band Director - Scott Morgan

Assistants - Tim Enos, Angela Gonzalez, Carlos Ortiz

Band Booster President - Tom Buckholt

Since the group can be a large one at times it is necessary for students to share the responsibilty for the success of this organization. It is for this reason that students are given the opportunity to become leaders. The band is headed by the director and its staff but student leaders include the drum major, head drill instructor and section leaders. Students that are not appointed to those roles show their own leadership by setting the example of hard work and a positive attitude. This years student leaders include the following:

Drum Majors - Samantha Lake & Edwin Mateo

Head Drill Instructor - Jason Pellum

Flute Section leaders - Nora Greene, Jen Woodstock

Clarinet Section Leader - Nikole Jewell

Saxophone Section Leaders - Frankie Andrews, Alex Kashtan

Trumpet Section Leaders - Jonathan Calhoun, Deanna Cappiello

Horn Section Leader - Levi Green

Trombone Section Leader - Therin Scott

Baritone Section Leader - Madison Nee

Tuba Section Leader - Nick Rose

Percussion Section Leaders - Jason Pellum, Zach Peterson

Marching band begins August 18 with band camp (see below) and ends in Early November. Rehearsals are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:00 to 5:00, Aug 31st through Early November (see calendar). Rehearsals are designed to coordinate the wind, percussion and color guard with the drill on the field. These after school rehearsals are part of the participation grade.

Band camp runs August 18, 19, 20, 23, 24 and 25 (see schedule upper left). Band camp is designed to teach students basic marching skills as well as music that is to be performed during the marching season. Part of band camp will be conducted outside on the field and part will be held inside the building. It is very important that students attend band camp since it is the only opportunity for such high intense instruction without other diversions of student academic obligations. This is also an opportunity for students to meet with other students and begin the bonding that makes our band program more of a family than a class. It is also during this time that percussion and wind parts will be assigned and instruments will be issued.

The marching band represents NLHS and therefore will attend and perform at home football games (Friday nights). A typical game day will begin with a rehearsal prior to the game (3:00-5:00) followed by a break before dressing in uniform for the game. Games will begin at 6:30 pm and end around 8:30 pm.

Typical marching band competitions also begin with a rehearsal (around 2:00) followed by a short break before dressing in uniform. The band will travel together by bus to the competition, which will generally last until approximately 9:00 or 10:00 pm. The band will also return together by bus.
