RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS

Grade 2 partnered with Chelsea Groton Bank for a fiscal management project to help make students responsible citizens. Chelsea Groton Bank provided each child with purple piggy banks and bank books.

Students were instructed that their job to be good students and that they would get paid on Fridays. Nathan Hale had a behavior chart where students get a green if they are well behaved or a yellow if not. If they received 5 green for the week they received 5 pennies and a bonus. If three greens they got 3 pennies. On banking days (Fridays) they traded the 5 pennies for a nickel or 10 pennies for the dime. At the end of the year they could keep the bank and the money. They got an extra bonus if they were 80% green all year. With bonuses they could have as much as 3 dollars.

We had a field trip to Chelsea Groton Bank in New London where they showed the children the vault, how to make deposits, the purpose of banking, what the tellers do and explained how to use the ATM machine.
