Jennings School houses the district's Dual Language (DL) and Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) Programs, and is open to New London residents in grades PK-5.
The Dual Language Program makes up 2/3 of Jennings School enrollment, and is an enrichment program in which students acquire a second language through academic content. Students receive instruction in both English and Spanish. Dual Language teachers are highly trained in second language acquisition and special instructional strategies are used to make the content comprehensible.
Due to the rigor of the DL Program, it is difficult to enter students, after grade 1, who have no Spanish language ability. If your child does have Spanish language ability and you would like them to be considered for available slots beyond the first grade, please contact Miriam Taylor to discuss enrollment, at (860) 444-3184.
In the FLES Program, within the guidelines of the CT World Language Curriculum Framework, "All children should have the opportunity to study at least one language, other than English, from pre-kindergarten through Grade 12".
FLES Instruction will occur in English and students will receive Spanish as a foreign language class. The program is limited to one class per grade level in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Jennings sibling procedure with specific guidelines:
-
Grades PK–1, siblings may enroll in the DL Program based on space availability and classroom composition;
-
Grades 2–5, siblings with a comprehensive understanding of Spanish may enroll in the DL Program, pending assessment and based on space availability and classroom composition; and
-
Grades 2 – 5, siblings with no comprehensive understanding of Spanish may enroll in the FLES Program based on space availability.
