New London, Connecticut is a 5.74 square mile waterfront community located on the eastern end of Long Island Sound, just 121 miles from New York City, 101 miles from Boston and within an hour's drive of Hartford and New Haven as well as Providence. New London provides easy access to highway, rail and waterborne connections. The City boasts one of the finest deep water harbors in Connecticut. The banks of the Thames River are home to Dow Chemical, General Dynamics Shipyard, U.S. Submarine Base, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Mitchell College and Connecticut College. New London exceptionally deep harbor also accommodates international import and export trade at the State Pier and Amtrak that provides passenger rail service linking New London with Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. Cross Sound Ferries provides ferry systems which link New London with Orient Point, Long Island, Block Island, and Rhode Island. Service to Fisher's Island is provided by Fishers Island Ferry District, located at the foot of State Street links New London to Fishers Island, N.Y.
New London is a small city which enjoys secure gracious living, a historic past, highly rated institutions of higher learning, a modern medical center, nationally known festivals and cultural programs, and a host of waterfront and recreational activities. Municipally owned Ocean Beach park, for instance, provides swimming in the Atlantic Ocean as well as in an Olympic size pool.
The New London Public Schools form an urban district and benefit from the cultural richness and diversity which is characteristic of a culturally variegated student population. That diversity of population is reflected in the many different programmatic opportunities which the school district offers its students. New London Public Schools operates eight public schools including two high schools one of which is the Science & Technology Magnet High of Southeastern Connecticut, one middle school, grade 6-8, four elementary schools, grade K-5, and The Friendship School serving PreK-K students in collaboration with Waterford Public Schools and LEARN.
